Digital preservation throughcloud-based digital archives forarcheology and paleontology

Challenge

The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) faced the significant challenge of preserving its vast and valuable collections, which span over 10 million artifacts, fossils, and specimens. These collections represent a unique record of human evolution and cultural heritage, but they were at risk of deterioration and loss due to the passage of time and the physical nature of the artifacts.

DDD’s Solution

To address the challenge of preserving NMK’s vast and valuable collections, DDD implemented a comprehensive digital preservation strategy. This involved creating a digital records management system on the AWS Cloud, digitizing the physical artifacts, training NMK staff, and developing a virtual museum experience. This solution has ensured the long-term preservation of the collections, increased their accessibility, and provided a valuable resource for researchers and the public.
