Before DDD: Recruitment

We recruit trainees from disadvantaged backgrounds, those with no access to education or good jobs.

We recruit from populations that are trapped by a cycle of poverty: a child is born to poor parents; she drops out of school to help her family; she doesn't have the skills or experience to get a good job; her own children are born into the same poverty.

In Cambodia, we recruit from the rural provinces, where sustenance farming is the primary livelihood. In Laos, we recruit from urban and peri-urban villages, where the job market is inaccessible for poor youth. In Kenya, we recruit from urban slum areas which are characterized by profound poverty and high unemployment. Our rigorous selection process tests candidates' aptitude through math and logic tests, gauges their personal drive through interviews, and assesses their financial need through home investigations. Our staff demonstrate high potential and motivation. They would not have comparable work or educational opportunities without DDD.

DDD uses fair employment practices that seek to reflect the demographic makeup of the general population: We aim for gender balance among our staff, and about 10% of our operator staff have physical disabilities.
