Challenge: Digital Divide Data is a rapidly growing social enterprise that will need significant capacity building to support the ongoing growth of its business and social missions. DDD was founded to create opportunities for disadvantaged people in developing countries; with our initial track record of success, we are now seeing our business growing rapidly and beginning to have a major impact nationally in the countries we work (currently Cambodia and Laos).
The Country Capacity Building Director will have an exceptional opportunity to make a significant impact on the growth of this dynamic social enterprise. The director will provide technical assistance to build the capacity of the Country General Manager and local management team, including the areas of business development, finance, technology, operations and human resources management. She or he will work to develop and strengthen the local management team, enabling them to run a significantly larger business. The Country Capacity Building Director will also play a critical role on the leadership team helping shape all aspects of policy and development of DDD.
Organization: Digital Divide Data is a social enterprise established in 2001 to create jobs and build skills in developing countries by providing IT services to business and public sector customers. DDD's mission is to create better futures for disadvantaged people in the developing world through technology-related enterprises. DDD is established in the USA as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, an NGO in Cambodia and a business in Lao PDR. As an NGO-like organization, we employ disadvantaged youth, including people with physical disabilities, orphans and trafficked women—and provide them with a first work experience, a stable income, and ongoing skills training. As a business, we are building an export-oriented IT-enabled services business that is already be the largest technology-related employer in Cambodia.
DDD has been recognized globally for our groundbreaking economic development model. We received the World Bank’s Development Marketplace Award from the International Finance Corporation, where we were identified as one of the most innovative development projects. Additionally we received the Global Knowledge Partnership’s Award for the best development program using information technology to empower youth. Our model has been profiled in numerous media – including the BBC, the New York Times, MIT’s Technology Review, and, most recently, in New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman’s book, The World is Flat.
Job Responsibilities: The Country Capacity Building Director is responsible for building the capacity of the local country management team at Digital Divide Data. The goal is to strengthen and grow our management team, preparing for significant growth over the next few years, including opening additional offices.
Key responsibilities include:
• Developing the Country General Manager’s skills in managing a large operations business, including building their management team, delegating responsibilities, implementing and scaling operations technology, maintaining effective financial oversight, and reporting regularly to the CEO and board.
• Supporting the Country General Manager in developing a management team, including identifying management gaps, defining roles, training and coaching new managers.
• Working with the Chief Executive Officer to identify organizational challenges, solve operational and business issues, and maintain strong communication channels between Country offices in Asia and North America.
DDD’s management staff participates in all aspects of the organization from business planning to social mission development. Similarly, DDD’s board and staff bring extensive experience and connections in fundraising and will assist and support the development director in reaching fundraising goals for the organization.
Skills: The candidate should have significant management experience in a technology –related business, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and experience working in a developing country. In addition, the following are desirable:

Patience and tolerance for other perspectives Ability to work with and lead teams of people Understanding of community, regional and global development issues Location: DDD’s country operations are in Cambodia and Lao PDR. In Cambodia, the position will support the main office in Phnom Penh as well as the branch office in Battambang. Some local domestic and international travel will be required.
