Organizational Background

Digital Divide Data (DDD) is a non-profit, “social enterprise” established in July 2001 to create jobs and educational opportunities in developing countries by providing outsourced digitization and data entry services.

Our organization is featured in Tomas L. Friedman’s recent book, The World Is Flat, in a chapter entitled “Outsourcing isn’t just for Benedict Arnolds. It’s also for Idealists.”

DDD’s operations in Cambodia and Laos employ more than 170 people. Employees receive above average wages for a shorter than average workday, as well as health benefits, scholarships for further education, opportunities for advancement, a community of colleagues, and the confidence and selfesteem that come from self-reliance. At the same time, we offer services that compete at an international level on cost and quality.

Start-up costs, capital investments and capacity building are funded by the United Nations Development Program, the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation, foundations and private donors. DDD’s ongoing operating costs are sustained by client revenue.
